Obituary

Arthur Richardson, Jr. was born on July 14, 1936, to Arthur Richardson, Sr., and Rutha Mae Richardson in Enfield, NC. He was the 5th of 9 children, and as a young boy growing up on a farm, he developed a strong work ethic and an appreciation of family values. He attended the local Eastman High School and graduated from there in 1952. Several years later, he moved to Virginia to begin work at the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company. He started there as an unskilled laborer, but after continuing his education, he worked his way up to first class machinist.

Arthur Jr. had met the love of his life, Collesta Hedgepeth, while they were in middle school, and they dated throughout their high school years, eventually marrying on February 9, 1958. Together they raised three children: Brandon, Sherry, and Christopher. Having learned from Arthur Sr., Arthur Jr. was truly a family man: a devoted husband, a loving father, and a wonderful grandfather, whose grandchildren and great grandchildren affectionately called him "Doll".

After 41 years of service, Arthur Jr. formally retired from the shipyard in 1999. But he never "truly" retired. He continued his machinist work by creating a machine shop in his garage, where during his spare time he put his heart into working on mechanical parts for his customers.

Arthur Jr. loved to work with his hands, and around his house and yard. He was passionate and meticulous about vegetable and flower gardening, and especially loved his roses. He always had the prettiest grass in the neighborhood. Arthur Jr. enjoyed traveling, and would often visit Nags Head, NC and Dover, DE to celebrate special occasions with Collesta. And on Sundays he loved to unwind and watch his favorite football team, the Washington Redskins.

Over the years he was a loyal and devoted member of Pine Chapel Baptist Church in Hollister, NC and Gethsemane Baptist Church in Newport News, VA. When the church needed him to help with repairs or projects, he always made time and was a faithful servant. Family and friends could always depend on Arthur Jr. He would do all that he could to help those he loved. He always had great advice to share and went over and beyond to support those he loved.

Arthur Jr. departed this life all too suddenly on October 11, 2016. He was preceded in death by his parents and older brother, Earlie, but leaves to cherish his memory: his loving wife of 58 years Collesta; 3 children: Brandon (Lori), Sherry Johnson (Ted), and Christopher (Terri); 1 brother: Garland Richardson (Pearline); 6 sisters: Alma Burgess, Velma Lynch, Velia Hinton, Eunice Hedgepeth, Esther Lynch (Samuel), and Eugertha Reed (Johnnie); 9 grandchildren: Marcus, Jonathon, Brandy, Christina, Jordan, Alexzandrea, Justice, Anthony, and Daniel; 9 great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, friends and other family members who will miss him dearly.

The family will receive friends from 4:00 to 6:00 pm on Sunday, October 16, 2016 at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home. A celebration of Arthur's life will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, October 17, at Gethsemane Baptist Church, 5405 Roanoke Avenue, in Newport News with entombment to follow at Parklawn Memorial Park.

Memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to the Hampton University Proton Therapy Institute.
